VDPAU and Window Manager on Jaunty Jackalope – Ubuntu 9.04

Today I did it. I’ve upgraded my system from Intrepid Ibex(8.10) onto Jaunty Jackalope (9.04). My Ubuntu x86_64 installation offered me, as always, a couple of new packages for update, and as I wanted to update, a message box told me, I could do a whole system upgrade onto Jaunty Jackalope. So I did and it worked. I took a very long time (>1h), but I had no unpleasant surprises afterwards.
All special sources.conf entries in my apt-get config have been commented out, and I started from scratch using a new Ubuntu installation.

VDPAU without tearing

I’ve reported several times about tearing with Nvidia’s new VDPAU driver. Now it seems I’ve found a working solution for me, to get rid of this pretty ugly tearing effect. Here are my steps:

vdpau 180.18 now supports TwinView – sometimes

Nvidia released on 22th December a new vdpau driver, the version 180.18. Here’s the release note:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=1882835. To be honest, I didn’t suck out much of it. So I’ve tested the x86_64 version against my three notorious candidates, like I did before for [1,2,3,4,5].

  1. Matroska (.mkv) still stutter (jerky playback)
  2. Sync_to_VBlank is still being ignored -> Tearing
  3. TwinView is working! (almost)

NVIDIA's VDPAU Driver, Version 180.16 – Hardware Acceleration for HD content (H.264) with major improvements.

I’ve just downloaded the latest NVIDIA 180.16 driver from 12th December, 2008 and tested it.

Follow the intructions here if you like to install NVIDIA’s Beta driver on a Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).

NVIDIA writes in the mplayer’s README.txt: Continue reading “NVIDIA's VDPAU Driver, Version 180.16 – Hardware Acceleration for HD content (H.264) with major improvements.”

VDPAU – The NVIDIA 180.06 beta driver for Linux – or how to play back AVCHD with GPU acceleration

[UPDATE] Read here about the latest development of NVIDIA’s vdpau video output driver: Tag: vdpau
I’ve been waiting for this moment a very long time, and honestly speaking, I didn’t really believe I would play AVCHD content form my Canon HF100 with hardware acceleration on Linux in the next future.

But today I did. Yes!

This is going to be a little HOWTO about installing NVIDIA’s new Beta driver 180.06 on a Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).

Please consider this is all real Beta stuff, and it’s really not suitable for usage in a productive environment. I had more glitches, than successfull playback attempts, and the developers of NVIDIA don’t claim it’s a bullet prove application, like you can read it in this document: Continue reading “VDPAU – The NVIDIA 180.06 beta driver for Linux – or how to play back AVCHD with GPU acceleration”

Tearing with nVidia drivers and mplayer with "-vo xv"

Well, let’s start with the conclusion: setting XV_SYNC_TO_VBLANK has no effect, if a second monitor is attached.

But let’s start at the very beginning: What is tearing? Well, this is how Wikipedia defines it:

Screen tearing is a phenomenon in video where a previously rendered frame overlaps a newly rendered frame, creating a torn look as two parts of an object (such as a wall) don’t line up…
